All decks require regular maintenance. Even if you’ve just finished building a new deck, it’s important to know how to care for it so it stays in good condition. A deck isn’t just an entertaining area, it’s an asset, and looking after it will save you time, money and frustration down the line. In our line of work, we often encounter worn and weathered decks that are beyond repair and need to be completely replaced. As we enter into summer and start spending more time outside, now is the time to start thinking about your deck maintenance routine.
Deck Maintenance Routine
An effective deck maintenance routine doesn’t need to take up large chunks of your time. It’s all about performing small tasks regularly. These include:
- Weekly general cleaning. This includes removing leaves, food and any other debris that can lead to rot if left to accumulate.
- Inspecting your deck regularly. Look for cracked boards or any signs of rot or decay.
- Annual deep clean. You may need to perform a deep clean twice a year depending on the amount of use your deck receives and the weather conditions it is exposed to.
- Coating and re-sealing – Deck coating needs to be reapplied at least once a year (sometimes twice) to avoid that horrible dirty appearance sun-exposed decks tend to take on. Sealant can last up to five years but if you notice that water has stopped beading and is instead soaking into the timber, it’s time to reseal.
How To Clean A Deck
Before you begin the cleaning process, purchase an appropriate cleaning solution. Check with a local timber supplier if you are unsure what type of product will work best on your deck.
Next: clear any debris, wet the surface and apply the cleaning solution as per the manufacturer’s instructions. Scrub down your deck and rinse with a hose. Where possible try and avoid using a pressure cleaner on your deck as they can cause damage to some types of wood.
